Imported pet microchip guidance

Imported pets may already have an overseas chip. Travel compliance and UK database registration are separate issues, so check both.

What to do

Step 1Ask your vet to scan and verify the chip number.
Step 2Check that the number matches the animal health certificate or pet passport.
Step 3Identify whether the chip is already recorded on a UK-compliant database.
Step 4If needed, contact an approved database about registering the keeper details in the UK.
Step 5Keep the travel and registration documents together.

What to have ready

  • Microchip number
  • Animal health certificate/passport
  • Rabies vaccination record
  • Import/adoption documents
  • UK contact address
For travel to Great Britain, the chip must meet the applicable pet-travel requirements and be recorded correctly in the travel document.
