Your pet is lost or stolen

Act quickly. Make sure the microchip database has your current contact details and ask the operator to mark the pet as missing where that service is available.

What to do

Step 1Contact the microchip database and report the pet missing.
Step 2Check your phone, email and address are current on the record.
Step 3Contact local vets, rescues and the local authority/dog warden as appropriate.
Step 4If you believe the pet was stolen, report it to police and keep the reference number.
Step 5Use local lost-pet groups and posters without publishing sensitive account information.

What to have ready

  • Microchip number
  • Recent clear photo
  • Pet description
  • Last-seen location and time
  • Police reference if relevant
