Transfer a microchip to a new keeper

When a pet changes keeper, the microchip record should be updated with the database that holds it. The exact verification process varies by database.

What to do

Step 1Identify the database holding the chip record.
Step 2Start the database's change-of-keeper or transfer process.
Step 3Provide the new keeper's contact details.
Step 4Provide supporting evidence if the database asks for it.
Step 5Wait for any verification or objection period required by the operator.
Step 6Keep the transfer confirmation.

What to have ready

  • Microchip number
  • Purchase/adoption paperwork
  • Vet records
  • Previous keeper details if known
  • Your proof of identity/contact details
A database may contact the currently registered keeper or ask for evidence before changing the record.
