Previous keeper problem

Previous Owner Won't Transfer the Microchip: What Can You Do?

If the chip is still registered to a previous keeper, the database provider controls the transfer process. Your next step is to identify that provider and ask what evidence or verification it requires.

Gather useful evidence

  • Purchase or adoption paperwork
  • Messages or receipts relating to the transfer of the pet
  • Vet records showing the pet in your care
  • Rescue or breeder documentation
  • Any existing microchip paperwork

If the previous keeper refuses

Explain the situation to the database rather than attempting to create a second record. The provider can tell you its dispute or evidence process and what it can do in the circumstances.

PetChipHelp is an independent guidance service. We can help identify the database and explain the process, but official microchip records are changed by the database provider that holds the registration.

Have the microchip number?

Check which database appears to hold the record, then go straight to the right provider.
