Stray dog microchip lookup

Stray Dog Microchip Owner Lookup: What Happens Next?

Vets, dog wardens, rescues and police appear often in the historical enquiries when a stray or injured dog is scanned. Public users should identify the database, but private keeper information should be handled by authorised organisations and the database.

If you found a dog

  • Have the dog scanned by a vet, rescue or appropriate authority
  • Use the chip number to identify the database
  • Do not publish the full chip number or keeper data
  • Ask the vet, dog warden or rescue to use its authorised lookup route
  • If the dog is injured, prioritise veterinary care
PetChipHelp is an independent guidance service. We can help identify the database and explain the process, but official microchip records are changed by the database provider that holds the registration.

Have the microchip number?

Check which database appears to hold the record, then go straight to the right provider.
