Dog keeper transfer

How to Transfer a Dog Microchip to a New Owner

A keeper transfer is handled by the database holding the dog's microchip record. Start by identifying that database, then use its official change-of-keeper process.

What to prepare

  • Microchip number
  • Your contact details
  • Date you acquired or adopted the dog
  • Any sale, adoption, breeder or rescue paperwork
  • Relevant vet records if the database asks for supporting evidence

If the previous keeper is available

The easiest route is usually for the currently registered keeper to begin or approve the transfer using the database's own process.

PetChipHelp is an independent guidance service. We can help identify the database and explain the process, but official microchip records are changed by the database provider that holds the registration.

Have the microchip number?

Check which database appears to hold the record, then go straight to the right provider.
